Buy and read eveything you can by Monte Zucker. Do a google on him, and learn from a master. He has many books, articles, and other forms of information and instructional material available. Absorb his knowledge, which he openly gives, and you can't go wrong.

Some of the best advice I got when I started was never be happy with just one shot of an angle or pose. Taking the same pose from a couple different angles, front, side, above, below, and always take two or so from the same angle and pose. If you are lucky they will all come back great but there are always times where you love your set up, lighting, angle but you just caught your subject in one of those seconds where they blink or something just isn't right, but setting that whole scene over again could be avoided with an extra snap of the camera. Also Never be afraid to take too many pictures.
One last thing.. Watch your shadow and Lighting, but don't be afraid to work with them!! Every person I have taken portraits of has chosen a picture with a unique shadow or lighting to have blown up.
Just what I was taught while taking my internship that has helped me.
