Thoughts on the Tamron af 18-200 f3.5-6.3 xr di II Hello, Does anyone know if this lens is a good one?

Suzanna: No, I have not tested it nor has anyone, as far as I know. It may not even be in stores yet. It sounds great! Here is what I wrote about it, after the PMA 2005 trade show. Cheers! Peter Burian Announced last year as “products under development” two of Tamron’s Di II series of lenses (for digital cameras with APS-C size sensors) will soon be available. The AF 18-200mm (approximately 28-300mm equivalent) f/3.5-6.3 XR Di-II LD Aspherical (IF) Macro is likely to be the best seller because it covers 80% of the most popular focal lengths. Featuring an entirely new optical design, the zoom includes XR (Extra Refractive Index) glass, three hybrid aspherical plus two LD (Low Dispersion) elements to correct all types of aberrations. Other features include new technology to ensure that all light rays strike the image sensor at an optimum angle for even edge-to-edge brightness plus special multi-layer coatings on numerous elements to minimize flare and ghosting. Particularly compact, the lens is just 84mm (3.3”) long and accepts 62mm size filters. It is compatible with Canon AF, Konica Minolta AF-D, Nikon AF-D and Pentax AF mounts.

Oh, oh, oh! I HOPE this one is good. I love my Tamron 28-300 and this one sounds like just the ticket for those times I need a wide angle! OOOOOO! Please be good, please be good, please be good! :-)

Karma: Considering that the optical formula has been improved, I think you can assume it will be at least as good as the 28-300mm Tamron. And you'll get true wide angle. Peter Burian

Peter, that sounds great! I know it's not going to be a pro lens. I have a couple lenses in that class and for certain things I love them. But frankly I'm not a pro and for my purposes this type of lens would be a fantastic addition to my bag! So I've already decided this is my next lens if preliminary tests hold up! Karma

Has anyone got an update on the Tamron 18-200 lens. I am thinking on buying one to use on my Canon 350D as my regular walk about lens. My other option is the Canon 17-85 IS len, but I have read some mixed reviews

Well, after recommending it today I've almost changed my mind based on a comparitive review of the Tamron 18-200 and the Sigma equivalent. Sigma shots were noticably better, especially in regards to purple fringing. This really surprised me as I personally found the Tamron 28-300 MUCH better optically than the Sigma equivalent. But as I've learned--judge it lens by lens. Don't even look at the name on the stinking thing. Put it on your camera and see if it works first! LOL Karma
