Digital SLR recommendation

Hi!
Firstly, this is one hell of a great site. Thanks and just keep everything going on...its a great resource centre.
Well, my question is rather a request for assisting me in buying a digital SLR. I am an artist and you can say a semi-professional photographer. I want to buy Digital SLR, for weeks I had decided that Nikon D70 is my choice. But Canon has recently released EOS Digital Rebel XT and it comes with EF-s 14-55 lens. Kindly let me know pros and cons of this model. Price is big factor for me, I reside in India. Moreover I have Canon EOS 300X with two lens. So how good is this camera? Kindly suggest better alternatives. I shoot mostly people and landscape(streetscape). Thank you!

Don't settle for less. I would stick with canon since you have the investment in canon lenses. The 20D would be a great choice. The digital rebel xt is filtered down technology. So is the 20D but it is closer to the source. Don't skimp on price if you sell photos.

If price is a big factor, stick to the Rebel. And if you have Canon lenses, DEFINATELY stick to Canon, unless you are completely dissatisfied with your lenses. If you CAN afford the 20D, and get a significant portion of your income from photogrpahy, then go for the 20D.

I recently bought the first Digital Rebel, which I switched to from the Elan 7 film camera. The reason was basically the same as you: the price was right, and I already had Canon lenses. HEre are the pros and cons:

Pros:
--It is compact and lightweight compared to the other DSLRs.
--The built-in flash is higher than in other Canon models, allowing you to shoot over larger lenses and lens hoods.
--The digital CMOS sensor is the same in the XT and the 20D (I THINK this is true...)

Cons:
--The original 300D (which I have) is a little slow--only 3-4 shots in a row before I have to wait for the data to transfer to the CF card. This hasn't been a huge problem for me, just a minor annoyance. The XT is supposed to be faster at this, though I haven't used it.
--the flash recycle time for the built-in flash is awful.

Hope that helps. Just keep in mind that the XT and 20D do have the same electronic heart and sensor. You'll have to weigh the costs and benefits of the extra features on the 20D, whether or they are worth the extra money.

Take care!

Elaine

You might also consider a Canon 10D which has dropped significantly in price. It's also a great DSLR. If you can swing the 20D then do. I love mine.

The EOS 20D and Rebel XT are both 8 megapixel cameras but do NOT use the same sensor.

Still, the XT should be one heck of a camera. See the preliminary Review at

I have the Mark2 and it will pay for itself. My second choice would be another Mark2. My thirsd would be the 20d which shoots very good in low light situations.

Slick: I owned the EOS 1Ds and now own the 1Ds Mk II but not everyone can justify such expensive cameras.
