Photography Question

Learning about flash

I'm very new to this whole photography thing, although i've worked in a Photo lab for a year or so I'm still fairly clueless!
I've just been handed a old but great 35mm SLR which came with a flash which moves at various angles. I'd like to know more about the different angles of the flash - when would I need to change it and what effect would it have? It also has differnt settings i've heard a bit about bounce flash - when would I need this? And what other types of flash are there?

Jude, let me direct you to some sites that explain why/when you need to bounce the light from the flash:

http://photonotes.org/articles/eos-flash/#faq2

and

http://photonotes.org/articles/eos-flash/index3.html#bounce

Most of the older manual cameras do not communicate with the flash. Those flashes either put out a full burst or some of them has a sensor on the flash that cut off the light when it sensed the light is enough to illuminate the subject. Since you did not mention what flash it is or show a picture, I guess those settings are for the film speed and what aperture you are using on the camera so the flash can adjust the intensity of light. Hope this helps.
