Photography Question

metering off the sky

What does it mean when someone says they first metered off the sky and then recomposed the shot? I have seen this mentioned many times and wonder why you would need to meter off the sky and not the subject matter itself. Actually, I am more puzzled by how or why you would recompose a shot that you already have in focus. Thanks for responses.

You would meter off the sky if that is what you wanted exposed propoerly, like with a silhouette. You would need to recompose to get what you wanted in the photo. With an autofocus camera, you would lock in the exposure and then focus. With a manual focus camera, like I use, it is easy. Just go to manual exposure, meter off the sky, set the aperature and shutter speed and then focus, or focus first and then set your exposure.
