Photography Question

What film speed??

I have an Canon AE-1 Program if that matters. I do aviation photography and new at that. I used to use Kodak 800. I found out 400 looks better. But I still want good color in my photos. Some people say to use 100 or 200. But according to Kodak 100 or 200 should not be used for action. Well these planes are moving around 150-500 MPH. SO I just want to know would I get blured shots at 400mm with a tripod using 100 or 200.

Note I will be using the fastest shutter speeds and I would like to make 8x10's and maybe larger. I really want to step up my work. And lose that grain

I'm pretty sure that you will be able to use 100 or 200 speed film for your photography. I assume conditions will be excellent because they probably wouldn't fly if there were any concerns about weather. That being said, since it should be so bright out, you should probably be able to use a shutter speed much higher than 1/125 second. You'll probably only use 1/125 if you shoot at f11 or a smaller aperture. You probably know, but don't forget that shooting against the sky might tend to give a few silhouetted unless the sun is shining on the side that you are taking pictures of.

To sum that up, you shouldn't get blurred images at 400mm using 100 or 200. If you can get a shutter speed around 1/500 which you should be able to do at least with ISO 200, you should even be able to hand hold the camera. Hope this helps!

OK thanks yeah I hope for bright weather you would be amazed what planes can fly through. The last time I went to a major airport there was less then 1/4th mile visibility. But hopefully none of that this time. Normally I let the camera choose the apeture and I chosse the fastest shutter speed of 1/1000th. I hope to hand hold quite a few shots but I think I am going to buy some 400 and 200. But I think I am done with 800 for good.

That's cool. Sounds good. I guess I didnt' realize that this was for commercial flights mostly haha. Yeah, they can fly in some pretty crazy things as my dad spent years traveling to Cali from the midwest a few times each year. Anyway, I guess I was just thinking of air shows and stuff, haha. Narrow minded me. Have a good one!
