Photography Question

too much cropping????

I seem to be doing ALOT of cropping these days on my pics. I shoot with a nikon film slr, and mostly use my 28-80 lens, and since I am in the practice, practice, practice mode, I am letting ofoto develop my film so I can see my work before I buy prints, and also edit if needed. I find that I am cropping at least half of a roll to get a better pic. What do I need to do in my shooting to avoid all this editing afterwards? I practice mainly on my son, who is 9 months old now, and I am getting in pretty close to him, to where I am just out of reach to him.I generally shoot him with both of us on the floor. My main croping problem is too much above and/or too much floor. I also tend to get some outside of the frame that I did not *think* I was getting in the shot, but have read with an slr that you have to shoot a bit tighter to avoid this, and I have been working on that and getting somehwat better results. Do I just need to get in even tighter or am I missing something else?

If you are using a 35mm slr, remember that the viewfinder does not show all of the picture area. The percentage shown depends on the specific camera. Since 35mm film is 24mmx36mm
(2:3 ratio), a 4x6 print (again 2:3 ratio) will show what the film captured. One thing you do need to remember before you get in too tight is that, if you enlarge to an 8x10 (4:5 ratio), you will automatically lose some of the long side of the print to cropping. If you plan to enlarge your photos, I would just continue doing as you are so you won't lose something important when enlarging.
