Photography Question

SHARON MCAULAY

Automating/batching photographs

HELP!!!!! Have just done a school shoot of 750 kids - now need to figure out how to process the whole lot! Is there anyone out there who can give me a STEP-BY-STEP explanation on how to change a couple of things in the shots, without having to do them all one by one. For example, I would really like to start off by viewing all photos in portrait mode - right now they are in landscape and my neck is killing me! Any help would be greatly appreciated. I have Photoshop CS. Many thanks in advance from Marbella... Sharon McAulay

  Sharon,
I know exactly what you are asking, but can only offer some vague instructions.
First, check File>Automate, and read up on it under Help. This may be where you need to go. Also, you can set up Actions which will automatically perform whatever you have recorded on each file. For instance, if you need all files to be turned 90 degrees, or a certain levels and color balance added, Actions will do it for you once you record it on one image. Hope this sets you in the right direction.

Hey Michael! Thank you very much for prompt response. Have been trying for a while, but I must be missing out one of the steps, because I can't seem to get it to work. Am trying for starters to do just one action - ie. rotate 90º CW, and once I get that down pat, would like to give all instructions, automate the lot, and go out for a drink. Looks like I have some more reading/practising/suffering to do... Many thanks again. Cheers! Sharon

  Sharon,
It should be pretty straight forward. First, open a file, and plan out in your head exactly what you want the action(s) to do. Wise of you to start with just one action. If its just a 90° CW or CCW, then truck on.
Click on the Action Palette so it is in front. If you don't see it on the right side, go to Window>Actions. At the bottom of the palette you should see a square, circle, and triangle. They represent Stop, Record, and Play respectively.
Now, with your file open, click Record. Then perform the 90° rotation. Then click Stop. Then you can name the action, and it will keep in that palette. Now open another file, and click Play in the Action Palette, and your image should rotate 90°. I believe you can put all your images in one folder, select the folder, then click on the action, and it should open each file, and perform the rotation.

Sharon, forgive me, I left out a very important part I now see.
Before you record, you have to click the icon near the right which is "create a new action". Then you will name the action, etc, and then record.
I think we'll end up learning together!

Michael - you are wonderful! Have woken up to find your specific instructions and am about to give it a shot. Hopefully will have the whole thing figured out and all my students sitting upright before the sun appears over the horizon in your part of the world. Shall let you know. In the meantime, have also taken a look at your website - you are obviously very talented! I especially love your b&w's of musical instruments (I still have a "wet" darkroom - one of my favourite places to be!), and your "Crazy Daisies"! Keep up the good work, and thank you once again for your help! Cheers!

Hi Michael/Sharon - don't know if you can help - I've the same problem as Sharon - would like to apply an 'action' to a whole lot of files. I've got PSE4, and when I open File>Automation Tools is not highlighted, iow, I can't click it to open it? I've tried opening one or two images, and then trying again, but no luck. Do you have suggestions before I try to read the manual!!
