Photography Question

Charley Andrisano

Color transition from film to digital

For the Better Photo Staff: I've been involved in photography for more than 30 years now. All film, all the time, and what a wonderful ride. Can you blame me. I've decided to take the digital plunge. When you shoot film you basically know the color variances your going to get in a given situation. If I want to get the feel and color of say Kodak Gold 200, or Fuji Color Superior 100, in essence I won't know what color variances I'll get with digital. I recently took some wonderful shots with a roll of Fuji Color Superior 100, and actually got more saturation from what I saw with the naked eye. These films have certain characteristics. What can I expect with digital? Does one have to tweak here and there in Photoshop, or some other program?
Your help would be much appreciated.
Respectfully, Charley Andrisano

  Charlie,
Being of your generation, with 35 years film shooting, and 3 years full time digital shooting, I can speak to you straight and blunt -
I'm sure you didn't do too much research with each new film you bought. You heard about it, bought a roll, tried it for yourself, and came to your own decision as to its value in your photography. Digital is here, and it's staying. So don't worry about its 'characteristics.' Jump in, experience it, and learn for yourself. The water's fine.
I WILL tell you this - digital sensors behave much more like transparency film than negative film. You expose for the highlights, and let the shadows fall where they may. I note the film you list is all color negative, so you WILL have to learn new shooting and metering habits, just as you would if you switched to slide film.
Check out some of my images at my website. Some from film, and some from a digital camera, all tweaked in Photoshop.

Why not just keep shooting film and buy a film scanner? That way you'll have the best of both worlds. I happen to have both film and digital 35mm SLR's and haven't picked up the digital in over a year!
