Photography Question

tripods

I;m about to buy a new carbon fibre tripod and want to know if 3 section legs give greater stability than 4 sections. The Manfrotto/Bogen models weigh about the same but the versions fold down to a more compact size and that's important as I want to use it for travel photography mostly.

  Dawn,
I would opt for the 3 section legs. While 4 section legs may be more compact when folded,, it takes a lot more time and effort to set them up than it does for 3 section legs. As far as stability is concerned, I do believe the 3 section would be a tad more sturdy.
I would also consider Gitzo over Manfrotto/Bogen. Gitzo is more money, but you really get what you pay for. Gitzo is guaranteed for life, and is a much better quality-built tripod. I've owned both brands, and can speak from experience.
Just as important as the tripod is the head you use. I'd recommend buying a good quality ball head for general shooting. I use Gitzo heads, but recently bought a Kirk ballhead with an Arca-Swiss quick release plate. This is the best head I've ever owned.
In my opinion, a tripod is the most important 'accessory' you can buy. Don't scimp on it or the head. Buy the best you can (afford), and you'll probably never have to buy again.
My two Gitzos are 25 and 15 years old, and going strong. I've owned two Bogens, each of which broke within a couple of years.
