wierd use of a tripod

Hi. I have a Contax Aria and an M7, a Bogen 3021 tripod and a Bogen 3262 medium-ball head with quick release. My cameras are small and light and the medium -ball head is normally enough. At age 60 however, I'm getting shaky and find that especially indoors with a fast B&W film, I'll use my tripod in a non-standard fashion to shoot friends and family. I'll tighten down the ball just enough to where I can move my camera smoothly under pressure. I'm shooting without really fully tightening the ball and locking a composition into place. I'm not using a cable release, but I am getting a lot more stability than I'd get by shooting hand-held. My questions are: Using this technique would it be better to buy a large-ball head? Would an expensive one be worth it or would say a Bogen head suffice? Does using a ball head in this manner damage it? I've never heard this topic discussed. I'd appreciate any advice. thanks
