partial metering

I just got a canon GII "entry level slr" and so far I like it, but being an amateur I don't know how to "use" partial metering or how it really works, I would like to take night photos and sports (soccer and baseball)

Partial metering just uses a smaller area to meter, instead of using various areas covering the enter view.
Should be a circle in the middle of the view finder that is the area for partial metering.
If the word use in quotes means when to apply it, it's when you have small areas/objects to photograph, surrounded by a majority of drastic difference in contrast or brightness. Prime example, stage show with a spotlight on somebody, but black theater curtains in the back, not much light anywhere else except on the performer in the spotlight.
