Photography Question

Camera Setup

I just transferred over from a 35 mm film camera (Canon Elan 7) to the digital (Canon 20D). I shoot alot of moving birds and kids sports photography. Would I setup the digital camera the same way as the film camera or are there differences for an overall (default type) setup.

I shoot negative film using a Canon EOS 3 and digital using a EOS 20D, both on the same wildlife shoot. I set the two up the same and adapt to changing conditions in the same way. I don't shoot slides, so I don't have to live with the limited latitude of exposure. Just remember that it is almost impossible to over-expose negative film, but when you hit the limits of digital all you get is white.

Shooting RAW mode will give you about one stop on each end of the exposure better than shooting .jpg. Some people will use this to their advantage by slightly over-exposing the shot in an effort to reduce the noise in the shadows just like Ansel Adams did with negative film. This works if you can live with the reduced shutter speed and you don't have some small white object in the shot that washes out.
