Photography Question

RS-60E3 or RC 1

What is the difference between the RS-60E3 and the RC 1?

Do they both use batteries? Or is it that the RC 1 uses a battery and the RS-60E3 uses a wire to attach to the camera?

Can either be used on the 20D whenever I'm ready to make the transition?

Thanks.

Bunny

RS-60E3 is a wired remote shutter release that needs to attach to your camera. RC1 is a wireless remote shutter release but it needs a battery to operate. Both of these remote releases cannot be used on the 20D. For 20D, the wired one to use is RS-80N3 or TC-80N3 and LC-4 for wireless.

  Thanks, Andy.

I had been trying to purchase only products that could be used on the 20D, but at least this is not expensive.

I appreciate all your help on this and everything else.

As Andy stated, the remotes for use with the 20D and higher level bodies are not compatible with those for the Rebel and Elan cameras. The Digital Rebel can use RS-60E3, RC-1, and RC-5 remotes.

Re: RS-60E3 v. RC-1
Note that the wireless remote requires that the Elan 7's film advance mode lever be turned to the timer/remote setting. Once set, the remote mode will remain active for just 4 minutes, then cancels to save battery power. Not a problem for getting yourself in group shots, but will be if your intention is to have the camera set up remotely to capture wildlife or candids while you seclude yourself. In those situations it is very inconvenient to reset the camera every 4 minutes. The range of the wireless remote is only ~15 feet (infront of the camera, much less from the side or behind), which also limits its use.

The cord for the RS-60E3 is very short, but can be extended with relatively inexpensive headphone extension cords from Radio Shack. See http://www.camerahacker.com/extend_remote/index.html I use this set up with my Elan, the RS-60E3 and about 30 feet of extension cable.

Joh, I always learn something new from you. I did not know about the 4 minutes remote mode on the Elan 7's camera (it should be on the manual somewhere). No wonder once in a while I cannot trigger my camera. I thought the battery was out of juice. When that happens, I switch to the 10 second delay on the camera. Your point about using the RS-60E3 with the Radio Shack extension cord is very good. Thanks Jon.

  Thanks Jon,

I'll return the RC-1, which I just purchased and get the RS-60E3 in its place.

I'm slow anyway, with no cartilage in my knees due to injury. I'd be continually frustrated with the RC-1.

Both of you have been very helpful, and I appreciate your patience with me. I've learned so much, since I've found Better Photo, and I haven't reached the point as yet of needing lessons, with all this new equipment to learn.

I'll follow up on your suggestion, immediately.

  Jon and Andy,

The article entitled "How to extend the RS60-E3 remote switch?"
At the URL: http://www.camerahacker.com/extend_remote/index.html, says the RS60-E3 is for the Canon EOS Rebel G, X, XS, 'Elan II, Elan Ie,' IX, IX Lite, and Digital Rebel (300D) cameras. It does not cite the Elan 7e.

At the Amazon.com Product Description, it is written:
"The Canon RS60 E3 replicates the functions of the shutter release button. The remote switch, on a 2-foot cable, is quite compact, and is compatible with the Canon EOS Rebel 2000, EOS Rebel X/XS, EOS Rebel G, EOS Elan II, EOS Elan IIe, and EOS IX."

Not cited is the Canon Elan 7E, which I have. Pardon me for being confused.

You may go directly to the Canon's web site and check out the accessories for your camera. Here's the page about the RS60-E3:

  Ditto, Andy's link.

The "camera hack" site was written before the introduction of the Elan 7.
The user manuals for the Elan 7/7e (pp.. 38,67,,70,72,98) and 7N/7NE (pp. 71,75,96) specify the RS-60E3 as the compatible wired remote switch, as do the manuals for the Rebel Ti, T2, Digital Rebel.

  Thanks, guys.

I book marked this site and sent a note to myself containing this information from you.

I hope I can return the other unopened box. But nevertheless, I thank you both very much, again.
