Before I start, let me say I am not a digital photographer. I am content with the film stuff I have.
However, I do read Popular Photography, and try to keep up with as many different aspects of photography as I can, so I can understand any kind of photographer I run into.
If you already have pentax lenses (FA or DA), the *Ist DS is a godsend for you. It goes for $899 (body only). from the decription of yourself that you gave me, I would not recommend that you buy the kit. All your pentax lenses will enjoy the 1.5x magnification factor of the DS, and you'll have more reach without having to buy new lenses. The camera also takes SD memory cards, which my local GROCERY STORE just started selling, so memory shouldn't be an issue. One of popular photography's only gripes was the fact that it did not come with the four AA batteries required to power it (by the way, when I still had my old T90, I realized the joy of shooting with AA's: you can buy them ANYWHERE!! no more hard to find and expensive one of a kind lithiums!).
In case you're still interested, the full review of the camera is in the December 2004 edition of Popular Photography.
In short, I'd go for the *Ist DS if you've got Pentax lenses.

  Hi Alex,

Thanks for the responce. I just bought the ist DS camera this weekend. I haven't taken alot of pictures yet but I have been reading the manual. I like the camera alot so far. The LCD screen is much easier to read then the istD. I read the same article about the AA batteries I'm like you big deal.

Thanks,

Ric
