Photography Question

Alan Kirkpatrick

Why the blur?

I'm shooting ski racing with a digital camera, at 180mm, iso 200, shutter speed 1/800, f/13, manual focus, sunny day, and about 50ft from the skier. I shoot them as they hit the gate. The gate and snow looks sharp, but the skier is a little blurry. Is it possible that the 1/800 is not fast enough? I've attached an image.

I am sure that is the problem. They are moving pretty fast.

At 50 ft away with a 180, you still have a lot of depth of field to work with, and you can use a wider aperture to get a faster speed if you need it.

Thanks for the responses. I think you're right that I need a faster shutter speed. I reviewed all of my shots from that day, and the ones that use a faster shutter are better. It was hard for me to believe that I needed more than 1/800! Next time I'll trade off some aperture. I wish it wasn't so overcast here all the time!

Increase your ISO to 400-800 it works on birds.
