Hello,
I have a Olympus C740 Ultra Zoom. When I zoom in close using regular zoom or digital zoom. The picture is blur. When I am far away an trying to get a real close up. Even when I am close to item I have a hard time getting a clear picture. Any suggestions.

  As you zoom to longer focal lengths and use the digital zoom, the more that any body movement or camera shake will affect the photo. Also, many zooms have a smaller maximum aperture (allows less light in) at the long end, so that as you zoom the shutter speed may drop and exacerbate the camera shake problem. Longer shutter speeds will also allow any subject motion to be blurred. "Digital" zoom simply crops the center of the image on the sensor and enlarges it. Digital zoom thus uses far fewer pixels and so has less resolution than the equivalent optical zoom.

To eliminate camera shake and subject motion blur, try to keep the shutter speed high (shoot in Shutter Priority exposure mode) and use good technique - well braced, easy press of the shutter button without moving the camera. If the light level is too dim to maintain a high shutter speed, then use a tripod.

Use a tripod

  The Olympus C740 has several exposure modes. You are probably using the Program autoexposure where the camera automatically sets both the shutter speed and aperture (a diaphram in the lens that regulates the amount of light let in). The camera also has:
Shutter-priority autoexposure - the user selects the shutter speed desired and the camera automatically sets the aperture;
Aperture-priority autoexposure - the user selects the aperture and the camera selects the shutter speed;
Manual - the user selects both the shutter speed and aperture.

To learn more about how controlling the shutter and aperture affect the photo, see the lessons here at BetterPhoto, or there is a tutorial specific to the C740 camera at http://olympusdigitalschool.com/cameras/c-series/c-740/index.html.
