Difference between lenses and the 20 D

Hi, I'm looking at a few lenses that I want to buy for my Elan 7ne. I have a kit lens ( 28-105 mm 3.5-4.5 USM). I am looking at the Canon EF Lens 75-300 mm 4-5.6 USM II/III AF; Canon EF Lens 24-85MM/3.5-4.5 USM BLK; Sigma AF Canon Macro Lens 70-300MM 4-5.6 APO and Sigma 18-50 & 55-200 Canon DC Lenses. What is the difference between these lenses? What are they good for? I want to do landscape, wedding and portrait photography. What is the difference between the Canon USM and the Sigma DC lenses? And will the Sigma lenses work on the new Canon 20D camera.I would appreciate any answers to these questions. Thank you very much.

First off, the Sigma DC lenses are intended for use with digital SLRs, like the EOS 20D or Nikon D70, that have sensors that are smaller than the 35mm film frame. These lenses should not be used with film cameras like yours since they will not put a full-frame image on the film.

The EF 24-85 f/3.5-4.5 USM is virtually the same as the EF 28-105 f/3.5-4.5 USM that you already have. If you want wider angle, the EF 20-35 f/3.5-4.5 USM (or similar from Tamron, Sigma, Tokina) would give you more versatility.

Of the tele-zooms, the EF 75-300 f/4-5.6 USM (only cosmetic difference between II and III), Sigma 70-300 f/4-5.6 APO Macro and Tamron 70-300 f/4-5.6 LD Macro are very similar and either would be a good economical choice. The Sigma and Tamron models can focus a bit closer than the Canon for 1/2 life-size macro instead of 1/4. For a little more money, the Canon EF 100-300 f/4.5-5.6 USM has some nice features these other 3 don't: a non-rotating front element for use with polarizer, and (like your 28-105 USM) ring-USM that is faster, near silent and allows full-time-manual focus without having to use the AF/MF switch.

P.S. The digital SLRs like the Canon 20D and Nikon D70 can use all of the film camera AF lenses. In addition, they can also use digital-only lenses (Canon's EF-S, Nikon's DX, Sigma DC) that cannot be used on the film cameras because of the smaller image circle they project on the sensor/film frame.
