Photography Question

Stefanie Mallow Russell

What kind of B&W film should I use?

I am photographing my friends wedding on the beach. I am also doing her bridal portraits (not on the beach). I am doing B&W and would like to know what kind of film to use for outdoors. I just did their engagement pics. but I haven't gotten them back yet. I used c-41 (I think). Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Stefanie - Excellent B & W SLR films include ILFORD FP4 Plus 125, or Delta 100. Kodak has the TMX-100, PXP-125 and the PX-125. Use a flash with enough power for the fill-in to avoid harsh shadows while outdoors. ( careful not to overexpose while you operate in 'M' or manual mode! )---HAVE FUN!

I have a Quantaray QBSZ-370 Bounce Swivel Zoom. I have used this in B&W photos before and I guess have over exposed. It left lines or shadows in the pictures. It was like the flash wasn't filling the picture. I don't know what went wrong there. Should I always use a flash outdoors with B&W?

Usually it depends on the lighting conditions...simply use higher ISO ( i.e. 400,800 and up ) if the subject doesn't have sufficient light IF you will not use a flash.( outdoors )---The fill-in that compensates for the shadows present in your subject will make it look much better rather than underexposed. Also try the bracketing method so you won't miss a shot.

Should I use 160NC or 160VC for outside color?

Think the line was having the shutter speed higher than the sync speed.

For the 160NC or 160VC I'm assuming that's Kodak Professional Color Print film? I really like VC because it has more color saturation but I'm a nut about color too. It's not too dramatic.

Here's a link to some pictures I managed to take an my friend's wedding with almost the same kind of film except it was 400VC. Some of the inside pictures look a little washed out though, possibly from my diffuser filter that I would rather not have used inside. Hope this helps!

Thanks! I just wasn't too sure on the diff. between VC and NC. Just started using VC and really liked it. I hope they are good!
