Photography Question

possibly changing the flash sync...?

Im into sports photography and have been shooting 35mm. I want to try some shooting with a medium format camera but I have a lower budget. By buying a lower priced camera flash sync speed lowers and I would like at least 1/250. the only cheaper camera I came across with a fast sync speed was a seagull. I would really want to get one of the cheaper Kiev's with TTL. I have a buddy who is really into electronics and he said he might be able to take it apart and change the kiev's 1/30 flash sync. The thing is, he doesnt know much about cameras. Has anybody heard of people trying this befor/have any suggestions? I know its not all that wise to break into a camera and try and change something.

The shutter sync speed is fixed by the shutter's design and manufacture and is not adjustable.

Medium format SLRs like the Kiev 88CM use a focal plane shutter. The flash sync is limited to the highest speed where the shutter is open on the entire film frame. At faster shutter speeds, the curtain doesn't move any faster, but instead forms a small slit that moves across the film surface. Even though the effective shutter speed can be as high as 1/1000, it still takes 1/30-1/60 sec (the sync speed) for the open slit to move across the film plane. If you use a flash at these higher speeds, the light falls on only the small portion of the film under that open slit at the moment the flash fires. There is no practical way to increase the speed at which the shutter is open on the entire frame.

Lower budget and medium format are generally incompatible. ;-) Besides the current Chinese (Seagull) and Russian (Kiev) models, you can look for old Yashicamat TLR (Twin Lens Reflex) cameras. While the TLRs don't have TTL metering, they use in-the-lens leaf shutters that flash sync at all speeds - up to 1/300 or 1/500 depending on model.

Holga 120s are pretty cheap "toy" cameras (less than ~$30), but flash sync at the 1/100 (approx.) shutter speed.

I'm with Jon on this, but you can sometimes find a good used Mamiya 645 on ebay and mamiya makes a 90mm leaf shutter lens for it but again even used the lens goes for several hundred dollars

thanks a lot for all your help. I think i'm just going to go with a tlr for now. later on when I get more into medium format i'll invest bigger lumps of change into a nice camera. but once again thanks for your help/suggestions.
