Photography Question

Maverick Creatives

subscription to a photo magazine

I would like to subscribe to a magazine that offers digital photography information and news.
Being relatively new to photography I have no idea which one is "in". I realize that this may be a difficult question with a variety of answers however any help would be appreciated as I will be reading them for at least the next 12 months.

For better or worse, most photo magazines provides a lot of info on digital. So, the question is - Which publisher?

I used to subscribe to six magazines. Then, it became obvious that several were just sister publications to the "more mature versions." For example: Pop Photo and Shutterbug, Outdoor Photographer and [I think it's} PC Photo.

I remain continually amazed at how commercial most of the magazines have become. Many articles are arguably advertisements.

Sometimes, there are gross inconsistencies. Check out the most recent Pop Photo which awards it's Digital Camera of the Year. Of course, they never did that before and I've subscribed for more than 25 years [albeit, digital is relatively new!] They've "raved the Nikon D70!" But, if you look at the Gear Guide - later in the magazine - the Canon 20D is given the heartiest comments and there are significant negatives included for the Nikon 70D.

What does all this mean? Pop Photo never met a camera or lens it didn't like! Or, maybe, they only print reviews for the items which are O.K. Poor performers may never make it to print. And, maybe that's O.K.

Reviews of equipment in betterphoto.com are probably a more valuable resource since there no commerciality.

As to "information" and, specifically, How-To's, Outdoor Photographer and Petersen's PhotoGraphic are my choices. Shutterbug is good but it often re-hashes what's in Pop Photo. American Photographer seem a little far out and really doesn't have much in the way of Hot-To.

There are zillions of other magazines. You can find them by surfing through Yahoo. You just need to find the one[s] that fit your needs.

John, I sincerely appreciate the fact you took the time to answer my question. I agree that our own little site here at betterphoto.com is a fantastic source for information, however, occasionally it's nice to relax in bed with a good magazine.
Your time has not been wasted in replying as I am subscribing to a magazine you mentioned. Again, thank you so much for sharing your thoughts.
Regards
Gary.

I subscribe to Shutterbug and Peterson's PhotoGraphic. I usually buy the Photoshop User magazine from the bookstore. It is nice to just sit and read a magazine 'vs' the computer every now and again!

Hello Bob and Lori. Thank you for you input. I agree Lori, it IS nice to get away from this computer and revert to the "printed word" once in a while.
Yes Bob, I'm still struggling along trying to capture that one shot in a million. Upgraded my camera slightly from the Fuji 5000 model to the 7000. It has a few more buttons and gadgets to confuse me even more *smile*.
Regards
Gary

  Hi Gary,
I read Digital Photo Pro, as you can see by the name it is aimed at the digital photgrapher. They also have some great articles on real time pro's who use digital. Check it out, the only downside for me is that it is bi-monthly not monthly! Good luck in your search.
Regards,
Del
