Shoting Christmas decorations at night

Want to shot Christmas decorated houses etc at night. What is the best way to do this? I know that I need to use a tripod but what general settings would I use. I use a Nikon D100. Will be very thankful for any help I can get. I never tried this before.
Thanks
Millicent

As I am not a professional at all, maybe you`ll not be satisfied with my answer.
I like also to take pictures in the night very much, and I still use old filmcamera very often.
(my only digital camera is Sony; cibershot P2)
I chekked the specification of your Nikon D100(quite good one isfnt it?).
And maybe I can give you some ideas.
When I make foto with my old manual camera,
I use iso200-400.(1600 is good for darkness, but the particles are rather rough as you knowc)
This is my suggestion.(It depends on how dark/light place you take. Please try these and find your own best wayc..)
1. Chose M mode (manual-mode)of P,S,A,Mc..I never use(P,S,A) auto-mode when I take a foto in dark places, because with auto-mode you can make only etoo lightfpictures .Or with this automaticaly aperture you can not get sharpness)
2. Diafragma: f/8 to f/16 is preferable.
3. Shutterspeed: 1 to 1/4 second(please try every speed)
4. Use tripod and shutter release of course!

By the way, when I take foto with my Sony digital camera(not very often),
1. Chose SCN dial and chose night-scene.
2. I chose –0.3 or –0.7EV to get more natural darkness.
With this Cybershot P2 you cannot choese diafragma(&shutterspeed) manually, which I am not satisfied(You can do it with your Nikon!!).
