Photography Question

Prefered Photo Format

As a freelance writer, I used to submit photos to accompany my magazine articles. At the time, the prefered format was color slides. What is it now? I have an SLR, scanner, etc. but want to buy a digital to use as well. I'm hearing some things about RAW. What do most publishers use nowadays?

Mike: Contact the publication and ask them to send you the photo guidelines. You can also check the web site of the publisher. Each one varies. More and more they seem to be able to handle digital....but many still want film, both slides and/or prints. Who do you write for? To date all my submissions have been ms. and 35mm slides. I am just begining to venture into digital but haven't done any digital submissions. Hope this helps.

Many publishers will take high resolution photos scanned to disc.
You can scan tif files to disc from your computer.

John: Thanks for the info. I've done some research since the original post and have found out that publishers are all over the board as to what they like to see. Most still like the old standard, however: 35MM slides. One photo shop I talked to in my area said, "The industry is almost in a state of chaos, things are changing so rapidly."

Regarding your question about my writing: I've mostly been an outdoor writer, but I'm exploring some new markets.

I'd like to be able to use a digital like the Canon PowerShot Pro 1 for packing into the backcountry (I live in Montana); I don't like packing the weight and the lenses for the SLR.

Mike: You're right about all that weight, especially if you are on an over night. I have heard good things about the PS Pro 1. If you don't mind, send me your email, I am considering a trip to Montana this summer and maybe you could suggest some photo locations....day trips only for me...gotten to old for those long overnight trips. My email is
gasawski@yahoo.com. John
