Need Suggestions for First Camera

I am in the process of researching makes and models of cameras, trying to find one that will fit my needs and budget. I want to take pictures of people, old buildings, animals, landscapes, etc with an artistic view. For my own enjoyment, nothing professional (yet). I like taking pics w/ my point-and-shoot and want to upgrade. I'm in the price range up to 500 dollars, and I want a film camera. Any suggestions? I kinda liked the EOS Rebel 2000 SLR... but am not sure.

i have the rebel 2000, currently, and it actually is my first camera. it has things that I didnt use before like depth of field preview, but now I am finding some of its features very useful. if you want an automatic slr I might lean toward that or any of the other rebel models. its a good learning camera because it comes w/ shutter priority, aperature priority, and a fully manual function which you should learn to use. it has a fully auto mode but I would avoid using that because it just turns the camera in to a like 200 dollar point and shoot. it all also has porrait modes and what not. I have had the camera for almost 2 years now and I finally think im ready to upgrade. another nice thing is the 7 point auto focus. so I hope you pic the camera that you think is right for you. also check out jafa photography tips for things to look for in a camera as a beginner.
