Photography Question

What am I doing?

I have a Minolta maxxum dynax 7xi 35mm camera. When I look through the eye piece cup I see a lot of scratches. They appear to be on a small square plastic square above the mirror. The square seems to be secured by small metal clips. What is the name of this cube like part and is it expensive to replace. The camera was given to me by a friend. Where should I take it to make sure that it is in proper working order?

  focusing screen.
find an authorized/certified minolta repair place. Or a camera shop that does repairs. Camera shop can get it fixed, but will take longer because they have to get the parts that fit from minlota anyway. Or have to send it somewhere. Which you'll have to do anyway if there isn't a minolta place near by.

Ditto what Gregory said. The focusing screen is not a user-interchangeable part on the 7xi and would need professional service to replace. It's very fragile, easily scratched and is a "do not touch" item. So is the mirror. Do not use lens cleaning fluids on either.

The good news is that a dirty or scratched focus screen does not affect the image recorded on the film. It is not in the light path between the lens and the film. If you can "look past it" in the viewfinder, it's not something that necessarily needs to be fixed.
