Consistent High Key Portraits

I thought my question posted earlier but don't see it. My question is when shooting high key (most of my work) how to keep the entire shot, bkground, subject area, foreground, in consistent high key. My area around the subject seems to be a little muddy. My film is 400 portra vc, my bkground strobes are set for F16 My main light for F8 and my fill light for F5.6 Camera settings 1/125 F8
My bkground seems to be much much brighter than everything else. Am I blasting too much light onto it? Maybe take it down to F11? Also just read that I may be metering my fill light from the wrong position. I meter it by placing meter from subject position pointing at the fill light. I just read I should meter fill by aiming meter at the main light? I can't wait until I can totally figure this one out! Any ideas/suggestions?
