Can someone please tell me how to resize pix to kb? And how many kb allowed for betterphoto contest?

This is done in an imaging software. Some digital cameras come with Elements 2 or some other software. There should be a screen for Image Size. Set the resolution for about 72 and the pixel length 750, if a horizontal, 600 pixels high if a vertical. Sharpen it slightly, so that there's a barely perceptible difference. Photoshop or Elements has "Unsharp Mask". That's the pro sharpening tool. For a JPEG like this, try the 3 settings in order, up to down, of about .86, .6 and 2.

If there's a check box for Resample, it should be checked. Now SAVE AS. If it is not already in JPEG format, save it as a jpeg. The software will ask for the degree of compression. I use 8 or even 10 (on a scale of 12). Send it on in. I think that betterphoto may have a system that compresses it further, with minimal loss.

For weeks after joining BP I had a problem with my images being soft. IF I don't resize larger than 480 pixels on the short side I don't have that problem.

  Hi Kelly,
It sounds like you are confusing what each standard of measurement is measuring.
1,024 Byte = 1 Kilobyte (KB)
1,024 Kilobyte (KB) = 1 Megabyte (MB)
1,073,741,824 Bytes = 1 Gigabyte (GB)
1 Gigabyte (GB) = 1,024 Megabyte (MB)
The images displayed on monitor screens are composed of many small dots of light. These dots are called pixels or picture-elements.
Resolution is the number of pixels per inch, or the number of pixels per cm.
72 pixels per inch is standard resolution for PC, 96 pixels per inch is standard on MAC.
Image resizing by dimensions is usually done by %, number of pixels, number of inches, or number of centimeters.
Kilobytes is the total file size of the image file. Whereas pixels is in relationship to display properties, and image size by length dimensions.
So you are not converting pixels to KB. Those are measurements for different aspects of a file/picture. KB deals only with total file size. Pixels in this case is referring to a measurement by length.
The contest states to use 72 ppi for your image's resolution. The dimensions of the image should be approximately 500 pixels per inch for the shortest length side of your image. ie- 500ppi x 750 ppi or 750 ppi x 500 ppi.
Hope this clarifies better for you.

  Concering totoal file size allowed:
* Saved as a JPEG, TIFF, BMP, or PING file type.
* Sized to no more than 500 pixels on the short dimension. For example:
1. 500 (w) x 750 (h) for a vertical image.
2. 750 x 500 for a horizontal image.
3. 500 x 1250 or so for a vertical panoramic image.
* Preferably 72 pixels per inch.
* Less than 2.5 MB. Files larger than 2.5 MB are not accepted.
Meaning the conversion of MB>KB would be approximately 2560 kilobytes(KB), as the maximum file size of your image file that would be allowed to be uploaded.
