When to use filters and adapter rings?

I am lokking into buying a Canon EOS Elan 7 n/e camera kit with two additional lenses, one of which will be a Sigma lens. I have a question regarding adapter rings and filters. Why do you use an adapter ring and is it nessasary for me get one? And alo, should one use a polarizer filter for shooting sunsets?

If you acquire the Sigma lens with Canon mount, you do not need any adaptor ring. The only time you need one is when, for example, you want to put a Nikon lens (or for Nikon mount) on a Canon camera, or a manual focus lens on a AF camera or vice versa. This is the adaptor ring for lens. There is another type of adaptor ring for filters (aka step-up or step-down ring). For example you have two lens, one wide to medium zoom and one long zoom with different lens diameter, and you want to use the same set of filter. Usually you will get the filters with the larger diameter and get a step-up ring for the smaller lens to use the same filters.

For shooting sunset, you do not need the polarizer. It won't hurt if you use it. Just need more exposure time. You can go to the filter manufacturer's sites (Hoya, Tiffen, Cokin, etc.) and learn about the polarizer filters.

Hope this helps.
