Reverse Comments

To make things a bit faster for those who like to take the time to comment on fellow BP'ers entries, I'd like to suggest that the comment box be right under the photo once you click to the comment page and the comments be reversed so the most recent is first. Would save us a lot of scrolling and doesn't sound(to me anyway)like it would be that complicated to change. Anyone else think this is a good idea? :-)

Janet -I think it is a marvelous idea! I love BP - but I do find it very tedious to comment on photos that already have a lot of comments. If they can't reverse the order, maybe they can just have a button at the top that allows us to give our input instead of scrolling down.

  Great idea, Janet!
Except that the earlier posts might never get seen by all, on some of the lenghtier threads.

Thanks, Diane and Bob! Good point, Bob, but if you want to see all the posts, you still could scroll and do so. Reversing the order would make it easier and faster to leave a comment. It's so hard to keep up. Any little improvement would really help!

Sounds like a great idea. This would be especially great for congratulating winners and finalists, where you don't need to review other comments.

Exactly, Wally! And when you go back to check on comments on your own entry, you won't have to scroll down past the ones you've already seen. You'd still have to option to scroll and do that though.

Well, I think the first comment (comment box at top) is a marvelous idea. I've usually read all the comments before decididing to add my own, then I have to scroll through them again, to add mine. Not user friendly. The reverse order would bo OK, too.

I really think that anything that could help to make it faster would be great! The number of Betterphoto members has increased so VERY much that it is impossible to write all the comments I would love to write. I would highly appreciate the revearse order too!

This sounds like an excellent idea. I think a button to get to the bottom quickly would be great, especially if you want 'uncheck' the box to be notified of activity on a photo.

This Sounds Quiet Trivial To Me,In Order To Comment On Someones Work You Need To Now Whats Being Said In The Discussion Area If The Order Is Reversed You Wont Look At Older Comments!LOL! You Will Miss Extra Pics In The Discussion Area Too Making It More Automated And Less Personal If You Dont Have Time To Comment Dont.

You'd still have the option of scrolling down to see what others have said and visit their galleries. We're just talking about flipping the order. And maybe you need to see what others have said before you can post your comment, but I can think of things on my own. :-)

This is a MAJOR pet peeve of mine also, Janet. I imagine it's a big problem for them to achieve technically, or I can see no reason the wouldn't have done it ages ago. I'd like to go straight to comment rather than having to read comments first and then go to comment. This is a BIG problem when you have dial up, as many of us do, especially on finals day.

Dolores Neilson   I think that idea is great, Janet! I too feel that scrolling to bottom of the comment section time consuming. Sometimes I just don't have the time to read all the other comments....I can take the time to read all the comments or I can post. I just don't have time for both when there are so many entries and finalists. The reverse order doesn't take away anything from anybody...the ones who want to read all comments can still do so but it facilitates commenting for when there isn't a whole lot of time. One can always return to read comments later...that's what I do. Scrolling down lengthy comment sections are just a waste of time for most of us busy people.

A click and drag for .6 seconds may not be a big enough deal for them to go in and write new html or whatever needs to be done.

I think this is a great suggestion, Janet! It would be faster to make a comment when you either don't want to or simply don't have the time to read all the comments--especially for those on dial up. At the same time, it doesn't prevent those who do want to read every comment from doing so.

I also just want to thank BP for some of the changes they have made recently that I find most helpful. For example, I especially like the bigger Description box that makes it easier to describe the photos I submit.

Thanks BP!

I love the idea about the comment box on top along with the uncheck box, but I don't think you have to reverse the comments to do this. After the first couple of comments they start to say the same thing (not that we all don't enjoy hearing how marvelous our images are from lots of People because we do and that is what makes this site so wonderful), but they do get repitious. So if left in original order directly under the comment box then you might have time to read the first couple of comments and also comment. I'm also over the box about the type of comment. As I'm the first to comment on a lot of images.

To Gregory: .6 seconds isn't a lot(and how did you come up with that number anyway?)but when you multiply it by multiple entries, it does add up. But, of course, you wouldn't know this, since you don't seem to leave comments like we do. And if it's a big deal to those of us who like to encourage and support our fellow BP members, then it should be a big deal to BP. Because, after all, isn't that what BP prides itself on? And pardon me if I'm wrong about you leaving comments. I've just never seen them.

I think that BP is already struggling with updating website technology to keep up with other similar and competing websites. And so my suggestion may be too complicated. However, I would like suggest that under the photo there are two options to choose from:
1. Read Photo Discussion
2. Leave Your own Comment
I don't mind repeating what others have said, it is simply reinforcement for the same ideas. So I don't need to read the photo discussion (other folks comments) when I want to be efficient that day. On days when I have lots of time then I might choose to read all the other comments. The bottom line is that the comment needs to go to the top. If you choose to read photo discussion, it does not necessarily mean that you want to leave a comment. At the bottom should be a button to leave comment, if you choose to do that, after reading the discussion which would link you to the top. Don't tell me this is too complicated...it is not! I have done a bit of web developoment.

Dolores Neilson   Gregory...I think Janet (and others) have a legitimate and helpful suggestion. Responding in the way you did by stating that it takes ".6 seconds" reduced the poster's issue to nothing more than a trivial and petty complaint.

I don't know how long you've been a member here but Janet is very active here and so am I. I too have not seen your support here at BP so it's important that you're sensitive to the members who are. Perhaps it would have been more helpful if you could have exercised restraint in commenting if you do not have anything helpful or considerate to say. Maybe to you, it's not a legitimate suggestion but to Janet and others, it is. Being argumentative and insensitive is not going to help you gain respect here.

I really like this idea. Especially for photos where you just want to congratulate someone. I know I love receiving a lot of congratulations, but it's hard to scroll through all of them to leave your own. It may be good to have an option where you can choose to show other messages or not when you comment. If you're responding on your own photo to other people's comments, then having the messages showing in their original order is really helpful for seeing who's commented. If you're just adding a CONGRATS to a long list, it would be easier and faster to have the box pop up at the top. Reverse order would allow both of these to be true (you can see the most recent messages to comment on if you're responding on your own photo, or you can simply type in your own message and ignore the rest if not).

Pam

Oh - I'm really enjoying this discussion! I hope something fruitful comes of it.
Gregory, just so you know - it is two 0.6 second clicks and drags - the first time to get to the respond to this at the bottom, and the second to get to the box at the bottom.
For someone who enters many comments, it can be very time consuming and annoying and I'm sure it is avoidable if they just put the links to "respond to this" and the comment box at the top. Let's say you comment on 50 photos in one sitting, it certainly does add up! BP is often open to suggestions to improving their site. I'm sure that if it is physically possible they will hear our plea and try to make it more user friendly.

I agree that new comments appearing on top would be a nice feature. However, I also find it quite efficient, if I don't feel like scrolling through 30 comments, to just hit the End button, which brings me to the bottom, and then scroll up.

When I read Dorothy's suggestion about hitting end to get to the bottom of the page, I thought, 'duh!', how stupid am I?' (no need to comment on that anyone)but then I tried it, and it takes you to the very bottom of the page so you still have to scroll to get back up to the comment box. And you'd have to take your hand off the mouse to do this. One really good reason to have the comment box under the photo, aside from not having to scroll past all the comments, is you'd have the photo in sight while you are commenting. After a couple comments have been posted, you no longer can see the photo when you're entering your comment. I really like seeing the photo while I'm typing my comment instead of having to scroll up and down a million times. It makes it easier to leave a more thorough remark. It might seem trivial to some, but you probably have a better memory than I do or you just don't usually leave detailed comments. Either way, that's how I feel about it, and I'm betting others would agree.

I agree. Being able to put the comment right under the image instead of at the bottom of a sometimes enormously long series of previous posts would make commenting a much more pleasant experience for the commentor. It would also make finding the most recent post much easier for the recipient of the comments.

I would agree about a easier way to leave a comment without scrolling all the way down. It would be great to be able to see the photo and then comment at the same time.

I agree with Elisabeth. I often like to have the photo right there while I am commenting, but if it already has a large thread of discussions, you gotta keep scrolling back up to check certain aspects. It's not the time I mind so much.... if I have lots of time one day, I'll comment lots, if I only have a little, then I comment on a few when I post mine and try to catch up another day. But having the feedback box at the top of the page would allow a viewer to see the photo while commenting. So great idea Janet and Elisabeth! Thanks for starting this discussion:-)

Great idea! It should be very easy to sort out, simple compared to many of the other fancy functions on this great site. It would be so much more user friendly. I know betterphoto is proud of being a very user friendly site but here is definitely something to improve!
