Going from Canon Elan II to Digital camera

I currently use my Canon ElanII for most of my equine action photography...I've been trying to use my Canon powershot G2 also but the slow focus time is horrible but sometimes you catch a great shot. What I want to know is if I go from my Elan II to the Canon Digital Rebel will I be happy? I want to capture the exact same shots I have been able to get with my ElanII 35mm. Also, can my Canon EF 75-300mm f/4-5.6 III USM lens fit the Digital Rebel? It's used on my Elan II right now. I just want to switch to digital and I have always used Canon cameras and am basically looking at the Digital Rebel because of it's low price. But, if I can't do with it what I do with my Elan II then I won't buy it, I will look at the other canon digitals. Inserting imgages below taken with my Elan II 35mm camera to show you what I want to be able to capture with the Digital rebel. What does everyone think?

The Digital Rebel is a perfect digital replacement for your Canon 35mm SLR. All of the Canon EF lenses fit. The focusing time is indistinguishable from my Elan 7E.
