Photography Question

Domen Kolsek

Help about education in photography

I didn't really know where to post this question, but the thing is:
I'm a high school senior this year and I would really like to study photography, I mean I'm in love with it and I would like to do this in my life. I would like to be a professional photographer. But the thing here is that I'm from Slovenia and no such school has a possibility of photography study. So I'm asking anyone here to tell me where in Europe (possibly Italy, France, if not than UK), can a man get a degree in photography? Thanks.

Well I'm in the U.S. and there are "schools" such as the New York Institute of Photography. Our colleges here also offer Photography as a course(Arts division) but as far as a "degree" I'm not sure that there is one just for Photography. I would check at any of the universities in the areas you asked about and just see about taking whatever Photography classes they offer! Best of Luck! Michelle

Thanks Michelle! I was looking at some web pages of a few universities and found out two things:
1. very expensive
2. hard to get in! :)

Well I'm gonna try to get into Fabrica in Italy. It's a Research centre of United Colors of Benneton and it is like heaven (you get a flat, food during the week, all equipment you need to study and pocket money for monthly living expenses). I have to say that sounds like heaven to me.
But it's probably very hard to get in. There is no schollarship and there are just two requirements: age under 25 and speaking English well. So I might as well try.

Thanks for your answer again Michelle!

  Hi Domen,
I teach photography at a couple of colleges in California so am always in favor of education. However, I have earned my keep as a professional photographer since the late 1960s. During that entire career not a single client has ever asked me how or where I learned how to do my work... not one. However, they have ALL asked to see the "book," my portfolio.
If you have a good eye proper education can really be a help, but do it because it can be an environment that help you learn, not because you think it is a prerequisite to being a professional photographer.
On "the street" only one thing counts and that is how good you are compared to the competition and whether or not you can run the business side of the work without going broke.
Good luck getting into Fabrica!
