Photography Question

What I don't see with filters !!!!

I have a X-700 Minolta,,old one, yes, but a good one. However, I am missing something when using filters or my eyes are gone bad. To start with,,
81b- just makes things look dull and gray on the prints.
80A-I haven't used yet.
Polarizing filter- I have used and have seen the sky bluer but though the viewfinder I don't see any difference as I rotate the ring so its just guess work with it. I hear so much about filters but maybe I am expecting too much with them and really don't know what to look for though the viewfinder.
I do have a u/v filter on one lens and a skylight filter on another. Should I take them off to use the other filters?
Everyone here is so helpful ,,I learn alot from the other answers to questions and I think its great how professional photographers take time to help us beginners.
Thanks in advance
Paul

The 80-A and 81-B filters are more for corrective purposes than for general use.
The 80-A is blue, and balances daylight film to indoor (tungsten or incandescent) light.
The 81-B does the opposite, and adds "warm" tones to balance tungsten films when used outdoors.
I see no practical reason to use either of these filters unless one of the aformentioned scenarios applies.

With the polarizer, when you rotate the ring you should see subtle differences in effect, but not as much as the film (or sensor) will actually record. (I rarely use polarizers but when I do, I usually just shoot the scene at the maximum effect).

As for your U/V and skylight filters, you probably won't see any effect in the viewfinder. These are used most often only as lens protection, since their effects are so subtle.
