Selecting a Tripod

Hello. I'm new to photography and I am shopping for a tripod (new or used) but don't know what features to look for. I need it for mostly outdoor and will need it to go in a backpack. I have read that the legs should extend high enough to bring your camera to eye level (62" for me) without raising the middle pole. Is ths correct? Also, what kind of tilting features are important and which ones could I do without, being a beginner? Thanks.

Ideally, yes, but you've got other constraints that are also important. I assume you want it to be relatively light, and collapsable to a size that is not appreciably longer than your backpack's length/width. I personally prefer a ball head to a 3-way pan tilt head, but your mileage may vary. Your camera is relatively light, so you don't need a real heavy duty head unless you plan to step up later to heavy SLR/DSLR with large lenses. Carbon fibre legs are very stiff and light, but expensive. Aluminum is good and economical. Some prefer the quick-snap leg locks, but I find then too loud/distracting and prefer the twist locks. Again, your mileage may vary.
