lenses I am starting a small business taking youth sports action photos, printing and selling on site. I am thinking of going with the Nikon D70 for my camera and I am not sure about what lenses I will need to capture the best action shots outdoors and possibly some indoors. I do not want to buy more than I need right now, just enough to get me started and to produce a great photo! Thanks Photos on the Fly

I do a lot of youth sports and my most used lens, by far, is the Canon 70-200 f2.8 L with Image Stabilization. I don't know what the Nikon equivalent is, but make sure you have a 2.8 lens or faster.

Since you have Nikon D70, my suggestion is: Low budget: AF-S DX 17-55mm Zoom-Nikkor f/2.8 G IF ED, it is good for indoors but not tele enough for outdoors(equv 25.5-82.5 in 135 camera),then attach an AF-S Teleconverter TC-20E II,the maxium focal length increase to 160 mm, the maxium aperture reduce to f/4.5. Then adjust the ISO on your D70, 400 or higher. You can take good sports photos with them. Medium budget :two lens, one 17-55mm f/2.8 and one AF Zoom-Nikkor 80-200mm f/2.8 D (AF-S Zoom-Nikkor 80-200mm IF ED is better but also higher in cost) With D70 it makes your maxium focal length up to 300 mm . If you think it is still not tele enough, attach an AF-S Teleconverter TC-14E II, to increase the tele side to 450 mm, and the aperture keeps f/3.5. Professional: once you make money with the above mentioned, go for AF-S 400mm f/2.8 IF-ED II Good luck!

Thanks for the input. I forgot to mention that I already have a Canon Elan II 35 mm with a Canon 70-300 AF. So now what I am thinking is that I will possibly go with Canon 10D and just use the lenses that I already have if this will work. Will everything be compatible? Is the Canon 10D as good a camera as the D70 Nikon. Thanks again!

Jenna, Canon has just released the Canon 20D. Might be a good one to check before buying the 10D. A few improvements and same price. I'm saving for one right now! Donna Jones

Jeanna, If you go with the 10D or 20D, your 70-300 will work just fine. You will get decent sports action if the light is good, but you will not be happy with the results indoors. You need to sell a lot of pictures so you can upgrade to the 70-200L f2.8. I also started out with the 70-300 on a 10D. It tends to hunt when focusing so you might miss some shots, but I got a lot of good photos with that lens. Now I use a 1D Mark II. One thing about sports photography is the quest for better photos involves lots of money for faster equipment. Liz
