Getting the color white right


 
 
Just wondering if anyone might have tips on shooting white portrait backgrounds properly. My pure white backgrounds always seem slightly grey. I've tried playing around with the white balance setting on my camera (Nikon D70), but honestly the auto white balance usually seems to give me the best result. Now, I do manage to adjust my whites with photoshop, but it'd be a lot nicer to get it right from the start. I'm just starting out in portrait photography, and am really trying to achieve the crisp whites of the pros. Thanks!
(I've attached a typical shot on a white BG before and after Photoshop adjustments.)

Andy 		  My best guest is not the white balance giving you the problem but the white background has fooled your light meter. Instead of adjusting the white balance, adjust the exposure compensation by adding 1 or 1 1/2 stop and see what happens.

Bob Cammarata 		  I agree with Andy that it may be an exposure problem.
Try metering off something "neutral" in the same light or use a gray card.
This will give you whiter whites.
