Photography Question

Gene Taormina

Digital Darkroom

Hi Jim,

I am planning to purchase a new computer and printer for Photoshop. Please advise as to the best computer & printer specifications and any information that will help in making my purchase. I currently have a PC but would change to a Mac if there were enough of an advantage. I also have a 1280 Epson printer. Would you also recommend the best system for calibrating digital cameras, monitor and printer? Thank you

Regards,

Gene Taormina

  Gene,
The 1280 is a wonderful printer, especially if you rig it with a third party continuous inking system. I've got three of them running in my studio with Lyson Fotonic inks. I'm a Mac user, and would use nothing else, whether for Photoshop, a text application, or anything. However, if you are comfortable in the PC environment, I see no real reason to jump ships here.
As far as new equipment goes, you probably need to set a price or size limitation, especially on the printer, and then shop from there. If you are interested in 13" or smaller prints, there's a lot of newer models from which to choose. However, if you get into wide format printing, you'll find the choices are rather few. I use an Epson 7600 (24"), and get wonderful results, although the pigmented Ultrachrome inks are not as vibrant as the dye-based Lyson Fotonic inks in my 1280's. Epson and Canon are really the only wide format printers available to the consumer, at reasonable prices.
