Shooting a full moon. Hi Jim: Hope you can help me here. We have a full moon here in New York and I decided to take a shot. I used a 300MM focal length. According to my Nikon School handbook, using ISO-64 film, the book suggests 1/250 sec, at f.8. I did just that, but noticed the exposure showed a minus 1-1/2. I took the shot anyway, and also bracketed to 9.5, and 6.7. Still the exposures showed minus 1-1/2. Will they be disastrously underexposed? How do I compensate for this and get a correct exposure? Many thanks for your help. Charley Andrisano.

If the moon is shining brightly and is not obscured by clouds or haze, that setting will record the moon darker..(more gray), than it appeared to the naked eye. You will however, get some nice texture and crater detail. A full-stop higher,..(1/250 at f5.6) will brighten it up, but you will lose some detail, and the sky surrounding the moon will appear darker. You will probably be happiest with your bracketed settings of f9.5 and f6.7. The reason for the -1.5 exposure reading is due to the the dark sky.

Correction: 1/250 at f5.6 will LIGHTEN, not darken the surrounding sky.
