Photography Question

On the Verge...

Just recently, I've purchased a new camera (Nikon N60) and this is a huge step up from my last camera which was fully manual. I really enjoy the simplicity of the Nikon N60 but I know that it has more capabilities than what I'm using. As an amateur photographer, still trying to learn the ins and outs, what do you suggest I do to gradually increase my knowledge of how to achieve greater technical merit with my photos? Aperture Priority? As of yet, I've really only utilized the automatic functions...any suggestions???

It's not what you have but how you use it. As your skills develop you will find yourself wanting to exert more control to make the camera do what you want it to.

The best advice I ever had was to think about photography in terms of light, and that a photographer "makes" verus "takes" a photograph. I suggest working at learning about light and how it relates to exposure and composition.

As you gain experience you will want to exert more control over focus and exposure. That doesn't always mean manual operation, if you understand what the camera will do in an auto mode and agree with how it will handle exposure and focus automatically. I don't always control exposure manually, but will set it up in AE mode when I know it will react the way I want it to, and take control when I know it won't.

Look around you, find something you would like to photograph, and then deliberately think about how to do it. In the process, don't be afraid to experiment with composition, and focus and exposure settings, but do keep some form of notes about what the conditions were and you did so you can compare it with results later and learn from it.
