Suggested Aperture/Shutter for Inside Sports Gym

I will be taking individual/team pictures of a volleyball team inside a fairly well lit gym. What aperture/shutter speed would you recommend? I will be using Portra 400VC film with a Nikon N90s and Sunpak 4000 flash, Lens 105 3.5-4.5. Also would you use aperture priority?

Thanks! DLB

  Hi DLB,
I would definitely recommend the use of aperture priority. Aperture priority gives you the ability to utilize the advanced functions of the N90s and still have creative control. Your aperture would depend on your background. If you don't have anything interesting try something between 3.5 and 8. The lower f-stop will give you less of a background. If they want to be near a mascot painted on the wall or something maybe 8 or 11. And please use a tripod. No matter what they think when you take the pictures. They'll think less of you if the pictures are blurred. Also meter down tight as fluorescent lighting sometimes can trick your light meter and leave a green tone on prints. Be sure to let the lab know your lighting situation.

So after you meter the face and reset your camera, the flash will automatically fill in the way it should? I too have the 90s with the sb28 flash. Thanks p.s. Aren't you limited due to the sync?

  Esther,
Actually, DLB would be but you shouldn't be. You have an SB28 and the SB28 should have a sync of up 1/250 (1/4000 of a second with the SB28). This will mean that the amount of flash power should be decreased, if there is not alot of flash needed.
By the way, the flash will not fill in the whole shot as needed. In a shot such as the one he will take, it will fill in for the face which will be the most important part.

One more question please, do you know if I can use my Vivitar 283 flash with my n90s and which cable would I use? Thanks again.

  Esther,
The flash should adjust itself automatically but, if it doesn't you can go into the mode selection and adjust your exposure compensation on the flash. The directions are in your flash manual. And you should be able to use your 283 on the N90s but, you'll have to consult your local camera shop for the cable you need.
