Photography Question

what is a ring around test?

I recommended recently to get a light metre and practice using it with my camera by doing 'ring around test' with them. I can't remember exactly what was said and would be grateful for some guidance? Many thanks.

The ring around test that I'm familiar with has to do with color balancing your color prints.

Basically, you have an easel with multiple windows. You get your print as close as you can (what you think is color balanced) and then vary the enlarger settings (opening 1 window at a time) and expose a single sheet of paper.

The ones I recently did had 10 windows and were used as a training tool for a college class to introduce color balancing to students.

This gave the students a place to start their printing (a set of numbers) that were at least close based on the lighting that the shot was taken in.

Hope that helps...
John
