Circle of Confusion

If the focal length on a lens gets smaller, everything else equal, does the circle of confusion get smaller as well?

When focused, the circle of confusion is infinitely small. As the lens is unfocused the circle of confusion grows. The CoC is not necessarily smaller with shorter focal length lenses, but it changes less with defocus than with longer focal lengths.

Out of curiosity, what is the circle of confusion? Is this with digital, film, or both?

Jon, sorry I didn't really phrase my question right. So your saying that, for example at distance X from the film plane, the CoC will be smaller with a smaller focal length? That makes sense. Or I suppose a better way of saying it is the shorter the focal length of the lens, the smaller the rate of change of the size of the CoC as you get farther from the film plane....

Pam, both; it has nothing to do with the sensor. The CoC is a matter of optics so as long as your camera's got a lens, there's a CoC. Check out this link

Wow it seems like we used the exact same link! What a coincidence.
