flash set up for group shot during day time

Since the 550EX uses Infra-red based technology to trigger other 550EX slaves. Does it work in the day time due to the brightness of the sun? or is it better to invest in a radio slave signal flash set up such as Metz or Qflash?

This is to be used for group shots of 10-20 people during weddings. I am trying to figure out what would be the easiest and most portable E-TTL multi-flash set up for group shot during weddings.

I just shot a wedding with a group of 17 people and
I've notice by putting my 10D on AV (apeture priority) mode, at F11, this dragged the shutter causing blur. So inorder for me to shoot at F8 - F16
to hold focus for this kind of shot. How should I talkle this sinario?

Thank you in advance for your help.

I've seen no technical data, but I wouldn't expect the IR communication to be any different in sunshine than otherwise. Re radio slaves, the sun kicks out significant radio waves as well. The IR communication between 550EXs (plus 420EX and ST-E2) maintains E-TTL auto flash exposure. Does the Metz or Qflash radio slaving maintain E-TTL? I don't know, but I'd guess no.

Re, dragging the shutter and blur - Av is the EOS slow-sync mode. It sets the shutter based on ambient light and uses the speed light for fill. If you want to set f/8-16 for depth of field AND maintain a higher shutter speed for handholding or to stop action/ghosting, then you have to use M mode and set both the aperture and shutter speed you want. You may (or may not) want to set CF14 to "1" to disable the automatic fill-flash reduction algorithm.

  P.S. I forgot:

As an alternative to M mode, I you set CF03 to "1", then when you use the flash in Av mode the shutter speed will always be set to 1/200.
