Print quality from scan

I have been working with a Minolta Scan Dual (2840ppi) film scanner and HP 7960 inkjet printer for a couple months now and feel I have a good handle on how everything works. I scan Fuji slide (Sensia) and negative 35mm film. Usually I enlarge to 8x10. Input scans are usually 2600 - 2700ppi (depends on crop)with file size around 25M (8bit).Output set for 300dpi. The prints seem to be "blotchy" when viewed under a magnifying glass, especially skin tones. All reviews I have seen concerning the 7960 say " better than actual photo print". I don't find that to be the case at all. Am I expecting too much from my scanning / printing equipment? From the suggested 4ft veiwing distance, of course the prints look good. When I see 8.5x11 ads in magazines, they look better under a magnifying glass than my prints do. Any feedback....

For my 2 cents worth, I think you are expecting to much. I also think that you are comparing apples and oranges when you look at an inkjet print and an offset 4-color print. It seems like you know your equipment well and are getting fine results.
