Best Zoom lens to buy for my Digtial Rebel

Hi,
I recently purchased a Canon Digital Rebel and being new to digital photography I am having a great time learning about my Digital SLR and it's capabilities. I would like to purchase a zoom for my camera but feel a bit overwhelmed by the choices that are out there. For now I think an "L" lens is out of my price range, so I would like to buy a lens that can shoot pictures of my daughter across a soccer field as she kicks the ball, or capture close ups of wildlife while out hiking. Any suggestions?

Hi I use a rebel for sports photography,.mainly soccer,I use mainly a 70-200 "L" usm F4,but there expensive,up to owning this lense,I used and still do use a 90-300 usm canon f4-5.6(australian about 350)you could do a lot worse than this superb lense with a lense hood attached.

  Hi Katherine

I was looking for a lens and found the Canon 55-200 its made for digital cameras, it’s equivalent to an approx. 90-320mm lens. It works well. I was looking at the "L" lens and I too found it a little to high in price for me right now. Take a look at my member sight http://www.betterphoto.com/gallery/dynoGallByMember.php?mem=67714
or my web site www.wayverzone.com to see some of the photos Ive taken with this lens and the Digital Rebel. The price is
not so high.

  Hi Katherine
I was wondering how you made out with the lens. I have a new Rebel XT and have been looking at a lens for it with some telephoto capability (I currently have the kit lens). I have been looking at the 55-200. Lynn
