Leica Cameras

What can you tell me about Leica cameras. I knew someone from Germany who said they were the best cameras ever made. How well do they really perform? How is range finder different from SLR? Do they make good B/W cameras?

Leica camera bodies are renown throughout the world for their quality of craftmanship. Their Summilux line of lenses rank among the best in clarity and resolution,...(along with the Carl Zeiss line for Contax and Yashica).
It's no doubt, that's why they're among the most expensive.
I cannot personally attest to their performance, since they are out of my price range. (bummer) :(

As far as the difference between an SLR and a rangefinder,...this is simple:
An SLR (Single Lens Reflex) camera, employs a series of mirrors to reflect the image in the viewfinder through the actual lens exposed to the film.
A rangefinder has a seperate viewfinder window.

Finally,...there are no "good B/W cameras",...only good B/W photographers. :)

With good film and with decent optics, any camera body can perform to the best of the user's abilities.

If you want to try Leica, there are some cheaper alternatives to the bodies that cost $2500 new and lenses that go for $1500.
The 70's Leicaflex SL SLR with a 50mm lens is a great buy at around $300-400. Expect a super bright viewfinder, even in it's aged yellowed state. If you like this camera, then the 90mm short tele and 28 wide are great choices, at about $400 each.
Rangefinder Leicas are unavoidably expensive. A workaround is a Voigtlander Bessa R2 body with a Leica Summicron 40mm f2. Even so, that combo would set you back at least $700.
Want a tip on lenses? Any manufacturer's 50mm will be so close to Leica's in optical quality that you'd have to do 14 x 11 and larger prints to see a difference, if its even discernable.
