Traveling: Saving and posting digital pictures?

I'm going to be traveling in Europe for a few months, and my budget doesn't afford a neat little memory card to CD burner. And while I do have a large memory card (for my Canon), I would hate for that to get lost or stolen and four months worth of pictures lost.

Any tips on how to save and upload pictures without a laptop? Can I do this at Internet cafés? Canon Int'l stores? Help!!

I don't know if they have them in Europe, but in the States most 1-hour photo places that will print digital have an option where you can create a photo CD directly from your memory card. I'm not sure if the quality stays the same, but it seemed to work perfectly well with my small files (my camera is only 2.1 megapixel). You just put your card into the print machine and choose CD instead of prints.

In the States, these are usually $5-10 each CD, depending on the coupons/deals that the store has going. So, depending on how many times you think you'll fill your memory card, it may be cheaper to go this route rather than buying a portable hard drive.

Maybe someone else will know for sure whether or not they have this option in Europe, but I would assume they have something similar given how popular digital is becoming for "home" cameras.

I did have this option in Paris when I was there in April. The machine was there, it was about 5 Euros to burn the cd. I believe that through most large cities (that would have a serious photo development shop - i.e. not a pharmacy...) would have these machines available at a reasonable cost.
Have a great trip!

I drop them on my ipod. I have a 20 gig ipod with 10 gig free and Belkin makes a nice little media card reader for 100.00 that plugs in and works very well.

  Hi Noah.

Pamela et.al. are correct, most of our photo shops that can print from digital will load your memory card onto a CD for safe keeping. If you are traveling to big cities, no problem, if you intend being off the beaten track make sure you have plenty of memory cards, finding a photo shop of any kind in rural France is needle-in-haystack territory.

A couple of points not really related:-

We have different electricity, 220 or 230 Volt 50 Hz (cycles), PLEASE ensure your charger etc. can handle this (otherwise a large bang and plenty of tears will result). The plugs are different too, in fact the plugs are different in different European countries, international adaptors can be obtained at the airports.

If you intend using the TV to review your pictures, we use PAL (shouldn't be a problem for most cameras, look in the book). Also, most TVs have a SCART or Peritel connector (not the RCA ones you have in the US), little adaptors are readily available here, but it's a real pain when you discover you need one at 10pm :-(

Finally, I shouldn't worry too much about theft, take normal precautions as you would in any city in the States, don't look too much like a US tourist (I'm assuming you are American, profuse apologies if you are not). Keep you bag under control at all times. The biggest problem is pickpockets in crowded areas, metros etc. I only carry a small amount of cash and one credit card on my person, the other stuff is stashed in the hotel safe, or invest on one of those money belt thingies.

Enjoy Europe.

Cheers
DC
