Need help on buying a digital camera for closeups

Hi I would like to purchase a digital camera to shoot close up pictures of tattoos and paintings. I have noticed that when taking photos of tattoos, the vibrant color in the tattoos look washed out, or are not true to the actual color and the person's skin is given one generic color (these photos are taken by one of my coworkers digital cameras which has 4.0 megapixles). On the other hand my other co workers digital cameras has a Zeiss lens with 4.0 megapixles, his pictures seem less distinguishable as a digital photograph. Both of their photographs are printed at the same photo center. I guess i'm wondering if it's the type of camera or printing (all photos are taken outside in natural lighting) I am looking for a digital camera in the $500 dollar range to take close up pictures of tattoos and paintings that are true to their original color. Any information will be very much appreciated.
