Photography Question

Pamela K

New member seeking feedback

I'm new to the website, and relatively new to photography, and was wondering if anyone could tell me the best way to get constructive feedback on photos entered into the contest. It seems like new photos are being entered every minute and it's very easy for those of you who do make comments to easily skip over new artists and new entries.

I don't feel ready to purchase a gallery yet, but would like to see what the site's like first. Is there a good way to get feedback without a gallery?

Thanks.
Pam

  Hi Pamela,

Yor best bet to get feedback is to post your entries early in the morning. That is when most people tune in to see what's up. You might also try adding "Feedback Welcome" onto the Description line.

Or, you can post a few here to this Q&A Forum and ask for constructive feedback.

Pam, another way is to invest time (and not money - until you are ready for a gallery). One suggestion is to post around the same time of day, every day you post. Then spend 15 -20 minutes commenting on other people's photos who post at that same time. Eventually they'll recognize your name and comment back on yours. Bob's suggestion of writing Feedback Welcome is also a good one.
Good luck!

Thanks for your ideas. I'll try to do that. It's a little hard because I'm a grad student and don't necessarily have free time at the same time every day. I've been trying to comment on other people's work a little each day, but I've been going through a lot of the old pics as well. Maybe I should start focusing on the newer stuff.

Thanks again for your suggestions and your time.

It IS hard for new people to get known for a while. Like Camm and Diane said, the best way is to comment on other people's work..Pick a few and then when they get used to seeing your name, it will stand out to them as they are paging through. Or got straight to the person and ask them if they would mind commenting on your shots. (include your shot number if you can). Good luck!

thank you for posting them for me Pam... not good at critiquing... I only know what my own minds eye see's and photography is my choosen vessel to flow it out from within... oops...stops... getting a bit philo there... lol
but not much in your work that I would have done different you have some wonderful photographs hun...
am sure as time goes on here you will find great comments of help and praise... this is a wonderful place for a pat on the back and also help if you have the need... I use to be scared to crop my macro's but am not any more... so play with them they give you alot of play... keep working at what your passion is and it will show though in your photography as I have already seen in what you have posted...

Wow! Again Thank you so much Jill. I'll probably take you up on that.

BTW, I just posted a before and after shot into a discussion on digital manipulation:

My comments are toward the end. Feel free to go take a look. (It's a pretty lively discussion...)

Ok, I branched out a little... here's the only shot so far that hasn't gone in the "Animals" category:

Also, I've been playing with Photoshop on a couple of my shots that Nancy had critiqued (new photos added toward the bottom of the discussion):

I love all of the pictures, but the snake is a little creepy. :) But a great shot to have been taken through glass. Keep up the good work.

I'm also wondering how to find all of the pictures I have posted so far? Is there a way to do this?

A couple of people have asked this on other threads. I wasn't keeping track at first myself, but after going through a lot of trouble to find them, I started writing down the number. You'll notice that all the links above are in the format:

http://www.betterphoto.com/gallery/dynoGallDetail.php?photoID=

followed by your photo ID #. If you write down the ID #, you just have to type it in after this addy and viola! you'll be there. This does not let you know what category you placed the photo in however.

To find my photos before I started writing them down, I adopted two strategies:

1) Any of the photos that have a discussion that you've started or responded to will show up on your sign in page. If you can vaguely recall what you titled your pictures, these links will take you to the discussion and thus the photo.

2) I used the "Find" command on my browser to search the contest dates that I couldn't find a picture for (I've been entering one/day). I would just run a "find" for my name.

However, I've heard two suggestions since doing the above that may be more useful (especially if you know which photos you entered and which you just put into discussions):

1) Find one photo that you took and then click on your camera. From the camera page click on "view photos taken with this camera" which will reduce the number of pictures you have to sort through dramatically unless you're using a really popular camera.

2) Start the sign up process for a member page and you will see your photos. Hold the curser over the photo and it should tell you the number. Then use the trick I showed you above to actually locate your photos. (Note: I haven't actually tried this, Jill Johnson recommended it to someone on another thread.)

Hope this helps you out! Good luck finding them.

Pam

  hi pamela,

i really like your "Rearward Assault" (closeup of 2 birds in a tree) photo--i just can't believe you took it w/a digital w/only 2mgs!

i just bought a nikon D70 (6mgs)--have you had much experience w/some other digitals?

  Thanks, Carrie!

No, I'm still using the first digital camera I ever bought.... It was great then and it's still great now except for the 2.1 MP part..... I haven't found a camera to match it for optics and features, though.

I'm planning to get a Canon Mark II as soon as I can afford it (unless they come out with something better before then). Don't know much about any other cameras, though.

I'm also thinking about trying Genuine Fractals to bump up the size of some of my 2 MP shots....

Pam

PS I'm off to travel for a while, so I may not answer right away. I still appreciate everyone's feedback, though!
