Having Trouble with Minolta Zoom 90EX Camera

Haven't used my Minolta Zoom 90EX AF 35mm camera for quite a long time. I just replaced battery, and inserted Koday High Definition 400 film. Now, when I look into viewer, the red light flashes, or stays on...even if I click button to take picture...the flash does not light, nor does it take a picture. What's going on here? I would appreciate an asnwer ASAP, as I need to take pictures to document some shoddy construction workand have it developed by tomorrow afternoon. HELP PLEASE!

If you don't have it, the user manual can be downloaded free from www.minoltausa.com.

There are 2 lights by the viewfinder. The upper one is for focus, the lower for the flash. The focus light will blink if it cannot confirm focus, for example if you are too close to your subject, and glow steady when focus is confirmed. The manual doesn't state it, but I'd guess the shutter is inhibited when the focus light is flashing.

For the lower light, a slow blink is a camera-shake warning (lighting too dim w/o flash, shutter speed too slow). It's not clear whether the shutter is inhibited in this situation. A fast blink means that the flash is charging and the shutter will not release until the flash is ready. If you have the flash set for Auto, it'll charge the first time you turn on the camera, but it won't fire if there is enough light.

If you have the red-eye-reduction pre-flash set, the flash-ready light will blink at varying rates. When you press the shutter a pre-flash fires before the shutter opens, then after a slight delay, the shutter opens and the main flash fires.
