David: If you don't make larger prints, I'm not sure you need a Digital SLR camera - unless you want to buy a lot of lenses.

The Fuji s7000 produces excellent quality in RAW capture but do you really want to convert every RAW image?

Here is an excerpt from my test of the s7000.
Fuji FinePix S7000 - Pro’s and Con’s

PRO’s

• Great versatility with high-grade 6x optical zoom and many photographic and digital capabilities; very effective autofocus system
• Quick response, high speed burst mode and fast image processing
• JPEG’s in native resolution exhibit great color fidelity, pleasing white balance and a moderately wide tonal range
• Images made in 12-MP raw or Fine (JPEG) capture mode are suitable for making large prints

CON’s

• Underexposes light-toned subjects; flash intensity is excessive in close-ups; use exposure or flash output compensation as required
• AF system is very versatile but Continuous AF is not available in burst mode
• Some viewfinder delay in updating live view after taking a shot
• Excessive compression produces higher than average digital noise in most JPEG capture modes

Cheers! Peter Burian

Hi, I'm not a professional, just a snap happy mom who has taken my lifelong hobby of enjoying taking snapshots to a more serious hobby in the last 6 months or so.
I just recently upgraded from the Fujifilm 2600 to the Fujifilm S5000. I know that its not the same model you are considering, but it is close so I thought I'd give you my feedback.
I had read all the reviews, on several sites, but there were more pros than cons for what I wanted. I absolutely wanted a very good zoom and it had to take good action pictures (my husband is the wrestling coach at the high school where I work and I had become the unofficial photographer).
I also e-mailed anyone I could find who has the same camera and asked them how they liked it (I tend to rely on the users of the product for the reviews). No one had anything bad to say.
One easy way to do this is check the review on the BP site, on the right side it says see pictures taken with this camera - then check out the photos and e-mail anyone you can. Most people are happy to give you their opinion.

The 10 x zoom is great! I especially love the burst mode for action. I'm also getting very nice macro shots. Battery consumption is very reasonable. (I use 4 AA NIMH rechargeables that you have to buy separately).
I've printed many shots in 8 x 10 (taken at the 3 megapixel mode) and have absolutely no complaints about digital noise. The pictures are very beautiful!
Good luck! (PS if you want to write me back my server is down right now so write me at dianedkallos@hotmail.com)
